Real Salt Lake v San Jose
Time Commentary
95+' It's over, 1-1 tie
With their stoppage-time equalizer achieved with just 10 men on the field, Real Salt Lake pulls out the 1-1 tie, moving to 5-6-5 on the season and remaining in fifth place in the Western Conference standings and leaving them with a 4-1-3 mark at home. The tying goal, an own goal charged to SJ's Chris Leitch, marked the ninth time this season that RSL has scored in a match's final 15 minutes. They are now 2-0-3 in their last five. Meanwhile, the Earthquakes were clearly upset with the result after surrendering the late goal and not being able to take advantage of an opponent that played the final 18 minutes or so down a man. So San Jose has still not won on the road since June 7 of 2008, with an 0-6-2 away record this year. They remain in the West basement, now 3-8-4, one point back of FC Dallas for seventh.
95+' SJ assessed third yellow for delaying match
A minute after Salt Lake's Robbie Findley, who entered the match in the 62nd minute, had a scoring chance nullified in the box by an impressive defensive play from SJ defender Jason Hernandez, Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon was shown a yellow card for delay tactics. As he prepared for a goal kick, Cannon took his time gathering up some streamers that were lying on the field and moving them out of the way, and was assessed the yellow. RSL was definitely enjoying the momentum after tying the match minutes earlier and was threatening to win the game outright after rallying from a 1-0 deficit, so Cannon probably thought it best to try and clinch the tie than allow RSL more offensive chances.
92+' Goal Salt Lake, ties it 1-1
After pressuring for much of the last 5-7 minutes, despite playing a man down, Real Salt Lake got the equalizer they were pushing for as an own goal was attributed to San Jose defender Chris Leitch. With the ball just outside the box, Yura Movsisyan tried to break past a couple of SJ defenders, and as he did so, Leitch poked it away from him, but the ball slid off SJ goalkeeper Joe Cannon's hands and slowly rolled into the back of the net for a heart-breaking tying goal against for San Jose. For RSL, it was the culmination of an impressive resolve that had them pushing offensively ever since Fabian Espindola was sent off in the 77th minute.
89' RSL continues to press, nice save Cannon
Salt Lake has been impressive as they keep pushing for the equalizer, despite playing a man down. A strong shot attempt by Ned Grabavoy from the edge of the box was expertly blocked by SJ defender Jason Hernandez, but the ball rebounded out to Javier Morales, who then boomed a 25-yard shot that Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon made the save on.
86' Another SJ yellow for delay tactics
San Jose once again is assessed a yellow card for its delay tactics as they cling to a 1-0 lead. This time, Chris Leitch was shown yellow for delaying on a throw-in.
83' Close call for San Jose, save Rimando
In their attempt to take advantage of Salt Lake having just 10 men, San Jose generated a prime scoring chance, but RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando made a nice save to keep the score 1-0. After a nice run down the right flank, SJ's Shea Salinas delivered a nice cross through the middle of the penalty area all the way across to Ryan Johnson on the far side of the box. Johnson drilled a hard, high shot that Rimando denied.
81' RSL still pressing, despite down a man
Real Salt Lake has clearly been energized by their predicament of being down a man after Fabian Espindola was sent off with a red card. They have controlled the ball ever since, buzzing around the San Jose area a lot, but still unable to generate a legitimate scoring opportunity. Impressive reaction by RSL to desperate circumstances.
77' Red card for Espindola, RSL with 10 men
Real Salt Lake was delivered a crushing blow as Fabian Espindola was shown a red card and ejected, leaving RSL to finish the match out, trailing 1-0, with just 10 men. After San Jose's Brandon McDonald took him down hard with a slide-tackle as he sped down the left flank, Espindola retaliated by kicking/tripping McDonald to get the red card. Another congregation of shoving ensued, but no other discipline was issued. Tough break for RSL to go down a man.
76' San Jose delaying tactics riles RSL
San Jose, with the 1-0 lead, appears to be guilty of trying to delay the match a bit, and it has led to some heightened tensions with RSL players. SJ's Jason Hernandez seemed to be hurt and eventually was assessed a yellow card, but a near-melee erupted as several RSL players tried to physically push Hernandez off the playing area so play could resume, and many players convened in a shoving match. Hernandez did end up with the yellow, but he also killed at least a minute off the clock, maybe more.
74' Salt Lake continues to apply the pressure
As they continue to seek the equalizer, Real Salt Lake has been pressuring the San Jose side of the field continually over the last several minutes. Impressive character for RSL to keep pressing, but at some point, they need to be able to capitalize on their opportunities.
64' Morales great chance, huge save by Cannon
Real Salt Lake responded to getting scored upon in impressive fashion, generating a dangerous counter-attack, but San Jose goalkeeper Joe Cannon made an outstanding save to keep RSL off the board. After SJ's Brandon McDonald took down RSL's Tony Beltran, Salt Lake was given a free kick in a dangerous area about 30 yards out. Off the free kick, Javier Morales boomed a hard shot right for the goal, curling one that seemed ticketed for the upper right corner, but Cannon made a spectacular leaping, diving save to punch it away. Close call there.
63' Goal San Jose, up 1-0
After Salt Lake dominated the last several minutes, San Jose made an impressive counter-strike as Arturo Alvarez scored his fifth goal of the season to give the Earthquakes a 1-0 lead. After a nifty give-and-go passing play with Pablo Campos outside the penalty area, Alvarez burst past several different RSL players, including Robbie Russell and Yura Movsisyan, into the box, and as he came in on RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando, Alvarez slotted a low ball just inside the right goalpost. What a play by Alvarez, blowing past about five different RSL players to get the shot.
61' Another close call for Salt Lake
Real Salt Lake has grabbed back the momentum in this match, totally dominating the last several minutes after Fabian Espindola's shot bounced off the crossbar. Espindola has continued to generate opportunities, particularly after slipping past SJ defender Jason Hernandez and cutting into the box off the left side before SJ's Aaron Pitchkolan blocked his cross attempt. RSL is definitely pressing.
58' Espindola shot off the crossbar
Real Salt Lake came extremely close to snapping the scoreless tie as Fabian Espindola chipped a shot that bounced off the top of the crossbar. As he raced down the left flank, Espindola appeared to be trying to get a cross into the middle of the box, but it curled and as San Jose goalkeeper Joe Cannon leapt up, the ball bounced off the top of the crossbar. What a close call.
54' San Jose pushing offensively
The Earthquakes have had what might be their best stretch of the match over the last several minutes, where they've controlled the ball and held it deep on the RSL side of the field. They've been buzzing around the penalty area, even generating a corner kick, but were unable to translate that into a scoring chance. But for a last place team decimated by injuries, that is a good sign.
49' Campos with a good chance for SJ
San Jose gets the first legitimate scoring chance of the second half, as Pablo Campos' shot was nicely saved by Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando. Campos made a nice move in the area, about 10 yards out, to evade RSL defender Nat Borchers and fire a hard, low right-footed shot that was ticketed for the near goalpost, but Rimando made a nice diving save to keep the game scoreless.
46' Underway in second half
We're back underway at Rio Tinto, as Real Salt Lake hopes to snap the scoreless tie and take advantage of an undermanned San Jose squad that lost two key players (Bobby Convey and Ramiro Corrales) to injury in the first half. Salt Lake seemed to get better as the first half progressed, so they might be poised to wrest control of this match away in the early going here in the second half, as they hope to improve upon their four-game unbeaten streak (2-0-2) and solid home record of 4-1-2. A win will vault them over Colorado and into fourth place in the West standings, while the Earthquakes are still seeking their first road victory of the year (0-6-1).
47+' End of first half, tied 0-0
The first half has ended scoreless, which is probably a relief for San Jose, after Salt Lake had a golden opportunity for a goal in the final minute snuffed out by a great play by Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon. Javier Morales chipped a short lead ball into the box ahead of Fabian Espindola, but Cannon rushed off the line and slid out to swallow up the ball and prevent what could have been an easy goal for Espindola if he had gotten to it first. Nice play by Cannon for the injury-riddled Earthquakes, who lost two players to the training room in the first half alone.
44' San Jose with another injury - Corrales
Terrible luck now for San Jose, as they suffer their second crucial injury in the last five minutes. This time it was Ramiro Corrales who went down with an apparent right ankle injury. As RSL's Javier Morales dribbled by him, Corrales slid in to poke the ball away, but his heel appeared to get stuck in the grass and rolled his ankle in the process. After staying down for a good 30 seconds, Corrales was helped off by the training staff, and SJ coach Frank Yallop was forced to make another substitution, inserting Michael Zaher into the lineup in his place. Another tough break for the Earthquakes.
39' Convey injured, comes out for Salinas
San Jose's Bobby Convey has pulled himself out of the match after suffering an apparent left hamstring injury. He suddenly went down and was clutching his left hamstring as he limped off. Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop then decided to replace him with Shea Salinas. Too bad for Convey and the Earthquakes, who have been riddled with injuries all season.
37' Cannon big save on Espindola breakaway
Salt Lake with the first big scoring chance, as Fabian Espindola raced in on a breakaway, but San Jose goalkeeper Joe Cannon came out and made a big leg save on Espindola's shot from about 25 yards out. Yura Movsisyan made a nice no-look spinning lead pass to spring Espindola in alone. RSL has certainly had the territorial advantage over the last several minutes.
31' Espindola not delivering in left corner
Real Salt Lake just had their second potential scoring chance in the last several minutes snuffed out because Fabian Espindola was unable to effectively deliver a cross from deep on the left flank. The first time, Espindola lost the ball to San Jose defender Aaron Pitchkolan and SJ counter-attacked upfield, then just now, his cross attempt made it into the box, but it didn't connect with anyone and went out past the end line for a goal kick. RSL needs to at least generate an opportunity on those plays.
24' Salt Lake starting to put on some pressure
Real Salt Lake just had their most effective stretch of sustained pressure over the last couple of minutes. Their control of the ball in the San Jose side of the field finally culminated in a 25-yard shot from Javier Morales that was easily stopped by Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon. Best span of the match so far for RSL.
20' Disjointed play as both teams feel each other out
The last several minutes have mostly been uneventful as much of the action has taken place between the 35-yard-lines, as both clubs execute solid defense in keeping the other off-balance offensively. For Salt Lake, at least, that is an improvement over the first 10 minutes or so, when SJ had the definitive advantage.
13' Campos yellow card for diving in box
San Jose's Pablo Campos had what could have been an outstanding scoring chance go by the wayside as he lost the ball deep on the right side of the penalty area, and it rolled past the end line after RSL defender Nat Borchers slid into his way. At first glance, it appeared that Borchers had taken out Campos' feet and a PK might be called for, but after Campos argued his case, he was issued a yellow card for arguing. Replays then showed that he clearly dove to the ground a split second after Borchers slid into his path but never touched him.
8' San Jose with the early edge in possession
The Earthquakes have had the better of play so far in the early going, holding the ball on the RSL side of the field for the majority of the first eight minutes. With the exception of one rush by Salt Lake where an apparent breakaway by Yura Movsisyan was nullified by a questionable offsides call, RSL has not been able to generate much in the way of ball possession or any semblance of offense. Good start for SJ.
5' Salt Lake missing three starters
Salt Lake has had to adjust their backfield a bit in this match, as they are missing usual starters Will Johnson, Kyle Beckerman and Jean Alexandre, all out of the lineup because of international duty, each representing their countries in the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament. They did get midfielder Javier Morales back on the pitch, though, after he missed some time with an ankle sprain.
1' Convey hurt right off the bat
San Jose's Bobby Convey goes down in the first minute after getting basically leveled by a high forearm from RSL's Chris Wingert. After staying down for a good 45 seconds, Convey managed to get back to his feet and remains in the match. That would be a tough break for SJ if Convey had to come out this early.
1' Underway in Salt Lake
We're underway at Rio Tinto Stadium where Real Salt Lake looks to extends their unbeaten streak to five games (2-0-2) against the San Jose Earthquakes. RSL sits fifth in the Western Conference standings with a 5-6-4 record, two points back of Colorado for fourth, so a victory would vault them up into a playoff position. Salt Lake has been solid at home, boasting a 4-1-2 mark here, while San Jose has struggled on the road this year, going 0-6-1 while being outscored 17-6 in those road games. The Earthquakes, while still in last in the West with a 3-8-3 record, have been better lately, posting a 2-1-1 mark in their last four and are now just two points back of FC Dallas for seventh.
