Colorado v Chicago
Time Commentary
90' Thank you and good night
That's it for this match, and we hope the rest of your Fourth of July is enjoyable. Once again, Chicago defeats Colorado 2-1 on goals from Marco Pappa and Wilman Conde. The win pulls the Fire into a first-place tie in the Eastern Conference with D.C. United, who drew against Columbus earlier this evening.
90' FULL TIME
And that's it. Chicago's strong play on the road this season beats out their history of futility in Colorado, and the Fire come away with a 2-1 win. The Rapids will feel they got a raw deal when Conor Casey didn't win a penalty, but berating the referee a few minutes earlier might not have won him any sympathy. In fact, Casey may have picked up a second yellow after the final whistle.
90' Nyarko down the right side again
Patrick Nyarko gets behind the defense and takes the ball to the corner flag instead of trying to find Marco Pappa in front of the goal.
90' In stoppage time
Three minutes of extra time have been added, and Chicago is looking to spend as much of that in the Colorado end of the field.
90' Big save from Pickens
Patrick Nyarko gets free on the end line to the right of Matt Pickens and cuts it back to Marco Pappa, whose shot gets blocked by the Colorado goalkeeper.
88' Final sub for Chicago
Calen Carr enters the match for Chicago, replacing Cuauhtemoc Blanco. This is Carr's first appearance since knee surgery midway through last season. For Colorado, Ross Schunk replaces Kosuke Kimura.
86' Casey appeals for a penalty
Conor Casey fights past Bakary Soumare, up the left side in the attack, then goes down with the next challenge from Chicago's defense in the penalty area, but the referee didn't see a foul.
85' Kimura shot saved
Kosuke Kimura gets free at the top of the box and has a go at goal, but Jon Busch is there to punch it away, giving up a corner kick. Greg Dalby enters the game for Nick LaBrocca before the play continues, and then Chicago clears after the restart.
80' Casey gets a yellow for dissent
Conor Casey fights for the ball with a couple of Fire players in the midfield, and is whistled for the foul. He expresses his disagreement with the call, and gets booked.
79' Another sub for Chicago
Chris Rolfe exits the match, and Patrick Nyarko enters. This should lead to some more long balls out of the back that try to get behind the Colorado defense for Chicago.
76' GOAL COLORADO!
Jacob Peterson beats Jon Busch to the near post after Busch stopped a header from Conor Casey, but gave up the rebound, and the second-half substitute squeezes it into space between Busch's outstretched hand and the post. Terry Cooke had the initial cross.
70' Cooke free kick snagged by Busch
Chicago commits a foul out wide on their right side, but Terry Cooke's diagonal ball is handled by the Chicago netminder.
68' Formation changes for Chicago
With the C.J. Brown substitution, Tim Ward has switched to the left side of the defense with C.J. Brown playing out on the right. In front of those two, it looks like Chris Rolfe and Marco Pappa have swapped as well, but that seems somewhat more fluid.
67' Colorado tries to capitalize on Chicago turnover
After Tim Ward makes a bad pass into the middle, the Rapids probe the penalty area with a series of passes, but the final ball toward the goal can't find a target, and Jon Busch scoops it up.
65' Fresh legs for Chicago
C.J. Brown enters the match, replacing fellow defender Daniel Woolard.
63' Busch grabs a Cooke cross
Colorado gets into the attack after Chicago gives up too easily in the center of the field, and Terry Cooke gets wide right again and gets a cross in towards Conor Casey. Jon Busch gets there first, though, and denies the chance.
57' LaBrocca earns a corner kick
Nick LaBrocca does a good job of getting past Wilman Conde on a Colorado throw-in deep in Chicago territory, but Baggio Husidic is there in support to slide-tackle it over the end line, and the Rapids' corner kick comes to naught.
50' Kimura getting forward
Kosuke Kimura is working hard to join into the attack in the first five minutes of the second half, but he can't catch up to a ball up the right side that Wilman Conde shields over the line for a goal kick.
48' Peterson with a shot on goal
Jacob Peterson did, in fact, replace Pat Noonan, and he dispossesses Baggio Husidic just outside the penalty area and puts a low shot right up the middle on Jon Busch, which Busch handles easily.
46' Jacob Peterson on for Colorado
Gary Smith has made one change at halftime for the home team, with midfielder Jacob Peterson coming on, and it looks like Pat Noonan has left. Will confirm.
45' A shot off the crossbar is, by definition, not on goal
Chicago is outshooting Colorado 8-2, with a 3-0 advantage in shots on goal. Two of those, obviously, went in. With Omar Cummings out of the lineup, the Rapids don't have that element of speed to get behind the backline, instead relying on the wide play of Terry Cooke -- again, that's Cooke, and not Clark -- to cross the ball into the box for Conor Casey and Pat Noonan.
45' Chicago dominating so far
The homestanding Rapids have had a few chances, particularly right at the end of the first half, but by and large, it's been all Chicago through forty-five minutes. Marco Pappa has been looking particularly good on the right flank, making things happen and running at Colorado defenders.
45' HALFTIME
That does it for the first half, with Chicago leading 2-0 on goals from Macro Pappa and Wilman Conde.
45' Noonan header just wide
Terry Cooke -- not Colin Clark, as had been previously reported -- finds some space on the right flank and sends a cross into the box that Pat Noonan gets his head to, but he can only push it wide of the post.
44' Colorado gets two heads to a corner, but can't convert
The Rapids get their best chance since Ballouchy hit the crossbar early, and it's Ballouchy again, getting a second header on a corner kick that forces a full stretch to the far post from Jon Busch, but the Chicago goalkeeper hangs on.
43' Ward tries to catch Pickens
Tim Ward finds a little bit of space and tries to test Matt Pickens, but Pickens gets back to the near post and grabs it.
42' Blanco can't pull the trigger
Marco Pappa gets past Jordan Harvey and Cory Gibbs and finds Cuauhtemoc Blanco on the far post, but one touch too many from the Mexican playmaker allows Kosuke Kimura to put the ball over the end line for a corner kick.
38' GOAL CHICAGO!
Chicago wins a corner kick, and Blanco finds Wilman Conde with the set piece, who is wide open and buries the header past Matt Pickens.
35' Busch intercepts a cross
Nick LaBrocca gets behind the left side of the Chicago defense and whips a cross towards Conor Casey, but Jon Busch is off his line to smother it before the forward can make any contact.
30' GOAL CHICAGO!
A great sequence of passes for Chicago with a diagonal ball from Wilman Conde chested down in the box by Brian McBride for Baggio Husidic, who cuts it back for Marco Pappa at the penalty spot, and Pappa finishes it cleanly. 1-0 to the visitors.
27' Casey sandwiched in the box
Colin Clark sends in a diagonal cross, but Tim Ward and Bakary Soumare surround Conor Casey so he can't get free to get anywhere near it.
24' Gibbs picks up a yellow card
Cory Gibbs sweeps out the legs of Chris Rolfe as the Fire tries to start the attack. Marco Pappa runs over the free kick and Blanco tries to pick up that run with a clever little ball, but Colorado is wise to it and clears.
19' Chances coming in bunches for Chicago
Daniel Woolard gets up the left side and forces Matt Pickens to punch his cross out at full stretch, and then Chicago looks to get another cross in from that same left side, but no one is there to connect.
17' Husidic volley sails high
Tim Ward sends a cross to the far post that Brian McBride gets a head on, popping it high in the air where Baggio Husidic tries a first-time volley, but it's not even close to being on target.
14' Ballouchy off the post!
Mehdi Ballouchy finds himself with some space at the corner of the box, feints once, and fires a shot that gets over Jon Busch but clangs off the crossbar and out of danger.
12' Colorado with a chance
Pat Noonan and Mehdi Ballouchy combine well to penetrate the Chicago defense, but Bakary Soumare clears the final cross. It gets as far as Colin Clark on the right side, who then whips a cross in that forces a collision between Ballouchy and Jon Busch, with Busch coming up with the ball.
10' Chicago pressing hard out of the gate
So far Colorado has had to absorb a lot of pressure from visiting Chicago, but the visitors may have to pace themselves given the altitude if they want to sustain that effort.
8' Blanco misses the target
Marco Pappa cuts a cross into the box after beating Jordan Harvey down the right side, but Chris Rolfe's shot is deflected, and Cuauhtemoc Blanco can't get the rebound on target.
7' Conde blocks a Casey cross
Colorado gets behind Daniel Woolard on the right side, but Wilman Conde slides in front of Conor Casey's cross, knocking it out for a corner kick.
6' Key Gold Cup absences
Both teams are missing players due to the CONCACAF Gold Cup, with Logan Pause and Gonzalo Segares out for Chicago, and Kyle Beckerman and Omar Cummings gone from Colorado's lineup.
4' Chicago can't get a shot
The Fire gets Blanco free down the left side, but once he crosses it into the box, nobody can get a clean shot off, but it's not for lack of trying, and Colorado clears.
0' First half is underway
Hello and thanks for joining us for Chicago and Colorado for this Fourth of July matchup. Marco Pappa tries an early volley, but it's over the bar.
