That's it for this match. Once again, it's a goal apiece for Columbus and D.C. United, which means United hangs on to the top spot in the Eastern Conference for the time being.
90' Columbus defense held firm at home
D.C. probably had the better of the chances, but despite missing Chad Marshall and maybe having some problems communicating in his absence, Columbus was able to limit the visitors to just the one first-half goal. Then it was Alejandro Moreno with a strong far-post run in the second half to even things up.

The ref blows the final whistle, and the two teams will each get a point for their efforts.
90' Lenhart picks up yellow
Steven Lenhart, probably still smarting from getting taken down, retaliates a bit by mauling Brian Namoff on a ball into the box, and sees yellow for his efforts.

As the clock passes ninety minutes, Steven Lenhart gets clipped and stays down for a bit, but not long enough to require treatment.

Chris Pontius takes a low shot from over thirty yards that Will Hesmer somehow isn't able to handle, and Columbus has to bang it out of bounds before Christian Gomez can pounce on the rebound.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto chips a ball up the right wing for Frankie Hejduk, but Hejduk is knocked off the ball by Marc Burch.

Ange N'Silu is off for D.C., replaced by Brandon Barklage.
82' Fred can't connect on the counterattack
Brian Carroll breaks up a chance for D.C. United as Fred directs a ball from the wing toward an onrushing N'Silu. Carroll does a good job tracking back and heads the ball out of danger.
80' Reckless challenge earns N'Silu a yellow card
Ange N'Silu gets a bit over-aggressive with his pressure on the Columbus backline, diving in late on Gino Padulla as Padulla clears a ball.
78' Lenhart just wide
Columbus gets upfield in a hurry, with Schelotto finding an overlapping Frankie Hejduk, who then whips a cross towards Steven Lenhart streaking toward goal, but Lenhart's shot is wide by a couple of feet.
75' Ekpo caught tugging Fred's jersey
Fred threatens to get on the end of a big diagonal ball from D.C. United, but Emmanuel Ekpo pulls his jersey to hold him up, yielding a free kick and earning a yellow card. A smashing effort on the set piece deflects off a defender's head and into the post from the outside, winning D.C. a corner kick that ends up on Rodney Wallace's feet, with Wallace's shot sailing high.
71' Wallace tries to help on the right
Chris Pontius and Fred get stuck trying to move the ball up the right flank for D.C. United, so Rodney Wallace comes in to help out, but his cross gets deflected back to him on the end line, where he's whistled for being in an offside position.
66' Gomez slow to get up after foul by O'Rourke
Christian Gomez is knocked to the turf by the forearm of Danny O'Rourke on an aggressive challenge, but the free kick from Marc Burch from about thirty yards out flies high and wide.
59' GOAL COLUMBUS!
Emmanuel Ekpo sends a diagonal ball to the top of the box, where second-half substitute Steven Lenhart flicks it perfectly to Alejandro Moreno, who had gotten behind the defense on the far post. Moreno takes a touch and buries it past Josh Wicks to tie the match.
58' Gomez tries to chip Hesmer
A great sequence of passes ends with a combination from Rodney Wallace finding Christian Gomez free in the penalty box, but off-balance, so he tries to chip it over Will Hesmer. Hesmer is wise to the play and gets back to grab it.
55' United using the left side in the second half
After working a lot of their attack through Boyzzz Khumalo on the right side in the first half, D.C. has found success early in the second half with rookie Rodney Wallace on the left. Khumalo has now been replaced by Fred, which could shift the point of attack again.
51' Wallace stopped by Hesmer twice
After Chris Pontius fights through a handful of Columbus defenders, he's knocked off the ball. It ends up in the path of Rodney Wallace, who drills a ball into the bread basket of Will Hesmer. Then it's Wallace again, capitalizing on a miscommunication between Hejduk and Brunner and a great move to then get past Brunner and take a shot, but Hesmer saves it and Christian Gomez can't quite turn on the rebound.
49' Brunner heads one out for a corner kick
Brian Namoff sends in a promising diagonal ball from the right side, but Eric Brunner is there to put it over the end line. Christian Gomez finds Chris Pontius on the corner, but the rookie's header flashes way wide, going out for a throw-in.
46' Halftime sub for Columbus
Andy Iro has been replaced by Steven Lenhart, which could mean Danny O'Rourke drops into the central defense alongside Brunner as Lenhart goes up top with Moreno and Schelotto, who may drop into a more withdrawn position. It could be a 4-3-3 or a 3-4-3 formation.
45' On the DC goal, offside trap thwarted by deflection
The play that eventually led to the United goal was ultimately unlucky for Columbus, as the backline had stepped up to pull United offside up the right side. Except that a deflection off the foot of Chris Pontius put the ball up the left instead, rendering that attacker in a passive offside position. Frankie Hejduk ended up getting frozen, which allowed for the first shot that Hesmer stopped. Then it was pretty much just chaos in the penalty box until Gomez got on the ball.
45' Khumalo all over the field
The man of the match through the first half for United is almost certainly Boyzzz Khumalo, who has been testing the Columbus backline with his penetrating runs up the wing and into the box, and then getting back to make key defensive plays.
45' United getting better chances
Shots are only 7 to 6 in favor of D.C., but 6 of those 7 have been on goal, while Columbus has only managed to get two shots on frame. Some of that has been the tendency for United to concede corner kicks instead of shots, where Columbus has the clear advantage, and possibly on free kicks close to goal as well. But without Chad Marshall to get on the end of those set pieces, Columbus hasn't been able to convert.

After forty-five minutes, the visitors have gotten out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Christian Gomez.
44' Long shot from Pontius almost gets past Hesmer
After Christian Gomez corralls a long clearance from Josh Wicks, he finds Chris Pontius running past a defender and Pontius gets off a long, low show that squirts under Will Hesmer, but the Columbus goalkeeper got enough contact to slow it down and direct it wide, where he collects it before anyone can get on the rebound.
41' Gaven and Schelotto can't thread the needle
Eddie Gaven does well to shake three D.C. defenders up the middle, laying the ball off to Schelotto, but the Columbus captain can't get the return pass through the thicket of black jerseys.
33' GOAL D.C. UNITED!
Christian Gomez knocks in a loose ball after a poor decision by Frankie Hejduk to pull an offside trap allowed Ange N'Silu to get off a shot that was stopped by Hesmer, but the ball got wide and was then crossed in, and a United player -- possibly N'Silu -- shielded off a Crew defender in the box, allowing Gomez to get a clear shot past a helpless Hesmer.

Columbus gets up the right wing, but Eddie Gaven's cross is knocked away by Boyzzz Khumalo before Emmanuel Ekpo can get a shot off.
27' Hesmer almost tricked by Khumalo's cross
Boyzzz Khumalo sends a ball in from the right side that may have been intended as a cross, but swerves toward the net. Will Hesmer seemed to think it was a cross, and has to leap across his body to his left to punch it out.

Emmanuel Ekpo makes a nice move to get by Marc Burch on the right side for Columbus, but once again, it's Ben Olsen to the rescue to deny Eddie Gaven on another cross, yielding another Columbus corner kick that gets cleared out as far as Schelotto, whose long shot if fielded by Josh Wicks at the far post.

Columbus strings together a series of short passes across the width of the attacking third that ends up with Frankie Hejduk making an overlapping run. Eddie Gaven tries to connect with the cross into the box, but Ben Olsen is there to break up the play.

Chris Pontius draws a foul nearly thirty yards from goal, and Marc Burch unloads a low shot on the restart that swerves wide and out of bounds.
15' Set piece again for Columbus
Moreno is fouled for real this time, and Schelotto tries a low pass on the free kick from five yards outside the penalty box. D.C. United defends it well and clears.
12' End to end action
First it's Ange N'Silu getting up the right wing for United, with Frankie Hejduk intercepting the pass into the box for Chris Pontius. This starts the Columbus counterattack, and a clever flick from Schelotto finds Alejandro Moreno pushing into the box. Moreno hits the deck and is shown a yellow card for diving.
10' Long free kick from Columbus
D.C. United commits a foul 40 yards from goal, and Schelotto serves a long ball that's just in front of Andy Iro as he runs to the far post, and it goes out of bounds for a D.C. goal kick.
9' Columbus looking a little disorganized in the back
With Chad Marshall out, there seem to be some communication issues among Columbus defenders. Nothing fatal yet, but there have been a couple of plays that could have gone much better. Something to watch.
6' Hesmer misplays a long ball into the box, but recovers
A long diagonal ball into the box makes Will Hesmer think he has more room to beat Boyzzz Khumalo to it, but Khumalo closes the space quickly and forces Hesmer to push it over the end line for a D.C. United corner kick that doesn't amount to anything.
5' Pontius can't connect with Khumalo
Chris Pontius gets free up the right wing, but his pass to Boyzzz Khumalo is behind him. Columbus struggles to clear the ball, but United eventually overhits a pass that goes out over the far side touch line.
4' N'Silu get the start for D.C. United
Fred may still be nursing an injury that had him listed as probably, so Ange N'Silu gets the start up top for D.C. alongside Chris Pontius.
2' Early corner kick for the home team
Schelotto takes a short corner for Columbus to Emmanuel Ekpo, but Ekpo's cross is just a bit too high for defender Eric Brunner to get a head to.
0' Columbus also missing starters
Chad Marshall and Robbie Rogers are also away with the U.S. squad, but Columbus still boasts MVP candidate Guillermo Barros Schelotto, who has been on a tear lately. A win for the Crew vaults them into first place in the East.
0' Where will the D.C. attack come from?
With Luciano Emilio and Jaime Moreno out due to injury, and Santino Quaranta off with the U.S. National Team, it's going to be up to Fred and rookie Chris Pontius to get the job done up top for the visiting United.
