FC Dallas v New York
Time Commentary
93+' It's over, Dallas wins 2-1
FC Dallas successfully defends their one-goal lead and ends up with the 2-1 triumph. With the victory, Dallas improves to 4-7-5 on the year, moving one point back of Los Angeles for sixth in the Western Conference. Jeff Cunningham had an impressive outing with two goals, filling in as the club's primary striker with leading scorer Kenny Cooper out of the lineup on national team duty. Meanwhile, New York still sports the MLS' worst record, falling to 2-13-4 on the year and extending their winless streak to 10 games (0-8-2). They are also still winless on the road this year (0-10-1), having been outscored 19-2 in those matches, and extended their league-record regular season road winless skid to 23 contests (0-17-6).
92' Dallas limiting NY's opportunities
As the clock winds down on the three minutes of stoppage time, FC Dallas has been very effective keeping the ball away from New York. As the Red Bulls attempt to score the equalizer, they have not generated much in the way of momentum or offensive opportunities over the last several minutes and of course, cannot score without possession of the ball. Nice defensive job by Dallas.
90' Wagner without a shoe, still playing
FCD's Blake Wagner spent a good minute or so without his right shoe after losing it as he maneuvered with the ball near the left sideline at midfield. He continued to stay in the match and played with one shoe before racing back to the sideline to retreive it after the play moved away from him.
85' Dallas opportunity denied by Cepero
Following a New York foray into the Dallas end of the field moments earlier, Dallas counter-attacked and nearly extended their lead to two, but Red Bulls goalkeeper Danny Cepero made a very nice save to keep his team in the game. After receiving a nice lead ball from Dave van den Bergh, FCD's David Ferreira found himself in alone deep off the right goalpost. He tried to chip the ball up and over Cepero, but Cepero impressively reached up with his right hand to knock the ball away. That was a very close call.
83' Wolyniec with nice shot, nice save Burse
Just moments after FCD's Eric Avila re-directed a nice cross from Blake Wagner just wide, New York raced downfield on the counter-attack. Juan Pablo Angel fed a lead ball for John Wolyniec, who had just entered the match for his offensive abilities three minutes earlier (and almost cost his team a goal against right off the bat). Wolyniec, entering the penalty area on the left side, drilled a high shot that Dallas goalkeeper Ray Burse leapt to punch aside. Nice shot, better save.
80' Cunningham hat trick goal called back - offsides
Dallas' Jeff Cunningham, who scored goals two minutes apart early in the first half, seemed to have notched his third, but the goal was waved off due to an offsides call. After FCD's Eric Avila stripped NY's John Wolyniec, who had just entered the match in place of Nick Zimmerman, of the ball, he boomed a hard low shot from just beyond the penalty area, forcing Red Bulls goalkeeper Danny Cepero to make a fabulous diving save. The rebound ricocheted out to a wide open Cunningham, who popped it into the back of the net, but he was deemed to be offsides on the play. Good break for NY, that goal would have effectively doomed their chances for a comeback.
74' Squandered opportunity for Dallas
FC Dallas had a golden opportunity after being awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area on the right side, but were unable to generate a decent scoring chance off it. After NY's Seth Stammler took down FCD's Eric Avila, Dallas' Dave van den Bergh curled the resultant free kick into the middle of the box, but it was knocked out by NY defenders and nothing materialized from it.
68' Avila good shot, Cepero good save
Dallas' Eric Avila, who had just entered the match three minutes earlier, had a nice opportunity off the left flank, drilling a hard shot from about 15 yards out, but a slight hesitation in unleashing it allowed Dallas goalkeeper Danny Cepero to get into better position to make the save. Still, nice start for Avila, who has already injected a bit more pace to the game for Dallas.
65' Avila in, Rocha out for Dallas
Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman made his second substitution of the match, taking out Andre Rocha, who really wasn't all that noticeable throughout the match, and inserting Eric Avila into the lineup in his place. Avila has been an effective part-time player this year and should provide more of a speedy, offense-minded presence.
61' Close call for NY
The Red Bulls continue to press for the equalizer, coming close this time as Nick Zimmerman boomed a 20-yard blast that skimmed off leaping Dallas goalkeeper Ray Burse and ended up just wide of the right goalpost. NY did not generate a chance off the ensuing corner kick, however. But when it looked early like this could be a blowout, NY has battled to make a game of it.
57' Dallas with a strong chance
FC Dallas nearly went back up by two, but NY goalkeeper Danny Cepero made a nice diving save. Drew Moor delivered a nice cross from the left side of the penalty area to Brek Shea on the far side of the box, and Shea's header bounced past FCD's David Ferreira right in front before Cepero dove to smother it. Nice counter-attack by Dallas, after it appeared that NY was controlling the play early in the second half.
50' Apparent NY tying goal waved off - offsides
For a brief moment, it appeared that the Red Bulls had evened the match 2-2, when Juan Pablo Angel drilled the ball past Dallas goalkeeper Ray Burse on a breakaway, but it was waved off due to an off-sides call. Angel received a nice lead ball from Sinisa Ubiparipovic, who had just entered the match after halftime, breaking into the open alone before slotting it past Burse from about 20 yards out. Close call there, it would be devastating for Dallas to lose this one after going up 2-0 so early.
48' Borman hurt again, coming out
New York's Danleigh Borman, who was hurt at the end of the first half, was injured again just two minutes into the second half. After staying down for a bit and being attended to by medical personnel, he limped off. This time, NY coach Juan Carlos Osorio took him out of the match, inserting Khano Smith into the lineup in his place.
46' Underway in second half
We're underway in the second half, as Dallas hopes to hold on to a 2-1 lead and pull out the victory. New York is trying to come back and secure its first regular season road win since May 2008. They are 0-9-1 so far this year, although they did score their second road goal tonight, so we'll see if they can build off the momentum gained from Juan Pablo Angel's late first-half goal.
46+' End of first half, Dallas leads 2-1
After scoring twice within two minutes, the second-fastest two goals in franchise history, Jeff Cunningham gave Dallas an early 2-0 lead, but New York got one back, by Juan Pablo Angel, just before halftime to send Dallas into halftime ahead 2-1. NY's Danleigh Borman, who had a nice assist on Angel's goal, seemed to suffer an injury during stoppage time, staying down for awhile and slowly limping off the field after receiving some medical attention, so it will be interesting to see if he returns for the second half.
43' Goal NY, now down just 2-1
New York pulled to within 2-1 on a nice goal by Juan Pablo Angel, his team-leading sixth of the season. The play was set up by a nice pass from Danleigh Borman on the left side of the penalty area, feeding it into the middle of the box where Angel re-directed it off the arm of Dallas goalkeeper Ray Burse and into the back of the net. Nice job by New York to cut the deficit to a more manageable number before halftime, just their second goal on the road this season in their 11th away game.
42' Burse nullifies NY breakaway chance
New York had their best opportunity of the night when a nice lead pass from Jorge Rojas sprung Matthew Mbuta on a breakaway. But as Mbuta tried to cut along the top of the penalty area, Dallas goalkeeper Ray Burse charged out at him and managed to poke the ball away, nullifying the chance. Close call for New York.
37' Cepero a busy man in NY goal
NY goalkeeper Danny Cepero made an alert play off a dangerous free kick from about 35 yards out by Dallas' Dax McCarty. After NY's Nick Zimmerman took down FCD's Jeff Cunningham for a foul, McCarty lined up for the free kick and curled one into the box on goal, but Cepero leapt up above the fray to punch it out of harm's way. Nice play.
32' Dallas with impressive counter-attack
After New York dominated the last several minutes, Dallas came roaring back to generate two prime scoring chances of their own. First rookie Brek Shea made a nice move to slip past Red Bull defender Jeremy Hall and raced into the penalty area off the left flank, firing a low, hard shot towards the far goalpost, forcing NY goalkeeper Danny Cepero to make a spectacular diving save. Then moments later, FCD's Jeff Cunningham nearly collected the hat trick when his header from the middle of the box, off a nice cross from Drew Moor, bounced just wide of the left post.
31' New York with another opportunity
The Red Bulls continue to press, having dominated the ball in the Dallas end over the last several minutes, and got another dangerous shot out of it. This time, Juan Pablo Angel chased down a lead ball from Danliegh Borman deep on the left side of the penalty area and tried a high chip shot that Dallas goalkeeper Ray Burse alertly leapt up to snag. Nice play from NY lately.
29' New York with some offensive pressure
The Red Bulls had a golden opportunity to cut their deficit to one but a scorching shot by Jorge Rojas was knocked out by a fantastic save from Dallas goalkeeper Ray Burse. After receiving a nice pass from Juan Pablo Angel, Rojas boomed a right-footed shot from about 30 yards out that appeared headed just under the crossbar, but Burse made a nice leaping stab to punch it over.
26' McCarty goes down, is okay
FCD's Dax McCarty, after being taken down hard by New York's Nick Zimmerman, went down and stayed down for a good 20 seconds. It looked like Zimmerman might earn a yellow card for his efforts, but it was just deemed a plain foul. McCarty eventually got up without even being seen by a trainer and remains in the contest.
20' NY with a good opportunity
Trailing 2-0, the Red Bulls have not quit and have pressured a bit on the Dallas side of the field since the second goal, culminating in a dangerous opportunity that didn't quite work out. Nick Zimmerman delivered a nice cross from beyond the right side of the penalty area into the middle of the box, where Jorge Rojas headed it just over the crossbar. Nice counter-attack by NY, which faces a major uphill battle here.
17' Goal Dallas, now up 2-0
Less than two minutes after going up by one, Dallas extended its lead to 2-0 on another goal by Jeff Cunningham, his third of the year. This one was set up by a perfectly-executed cross from former Red Bull Dave van den Bergh, who delivered it from the right corner of the box to a charging Cunningham at the left (far) goalpost, and Cunningham boomed it home past NY goalkeeper Danny Cepero with his left foot. Big goal for Dallas and devastating goal against for New York, which has scored just one goal in their 10 prior road games this season.
15' Goal Dallas, up 1-0
FC Dallas takes the early lead off a New York giveaway that was nicely capitalized on by Jeff Cunningham for his second goal of the season. As Dallas pressured NY in their own end, Red Bull midfielder Luke Sassano passed it back towards his defenders, but Cunningham pounced on the loose ball at the top of the box, made a slick move to evade NY defender Andrew Boyens and as he cut into the middle alone against Red Bulls goalkeeper Danny Cepero, Cunningham slotted a low ball inside the left goalpost. Nice execution by Cunningham but a costly giveaway by Sassano.
11' Another Dallas shot, another Cepero save
Dallas came close again, generating a dangerous scoring opportunity off what initially seemed to be a routine play. Defender Drew Moor launched a nice cross from the right sideline about 35 yards out that curled into the middle of the box and found FCD's David Ferreira, who volleyed it with a nice header right on goal, but Red Bulls goalkeeper Danny Cepero made a nice stop. Ferreira has already looked good so far in the early going, which is going to be important for Dallas, who is missing star striker (and leading scorer) Kenny Cooper, who is with the US national team for CONCACAF Gold Cup action.
9' Zimmerman with NY's first good chance
Just moments after a potential Dallas scoring chance was waved off due to an offsides call on rookie Brek Shea, New York counter-attacked and generated their first legitimate chance. After receiving a nice lead pass, Nick Zimmerman stepped into the top of the penalty area and drilled a right-footed shot that forced Dallas goalkeeper Ray Burse to make a difficult save. Nice response by NY to Dallas' offensive push.
5' Cunningham with first shot on goal
FC Dallas generated the match's first scoring opportunity, a shot by Jeff Cunningham that New York goalkeeper Danny Cepero made a nice save on. The play was set up by an impressive lead pass from David Ferreira and Cunningham, about five yards into the penalty area, chipped a left-footed shot that Cepero swallowed up. Nice start for Dallas.
1' Underway in Dallas
We're underway here at Pizza Hut Park, as FC Dallas looks to improve on their 3-7-5 season record, which has them sitting in seventh in the Western Conference standings. They have been doing better lately, though, dropping just one of their last seven matches (2-1-4). For New York, they hope that they can finally put an end to their record struggles on the road. NY is 0-9-1 away from Giants Stadium this year, having been outscored 17-1 in the process, and they have not won a regular season game on the road since May 10, 2008, a MLS-record 22 games (0-16-6). The Red Bulls are winless in their last nine overall (0-7-2).
