Los Angeles v New England
Time Commentary
FT' Final: Los Angeles 1, New England 0
The Galaxy survived an inspired second half from the visiting New England side and make an 8th-minute goal from newly acquired Alecko Eskandarian stand up in a 1-0 victory. Eskandarian with the goal, backup keeper Saunders with the shutout, and Los Angeles gets a hard-earned three points. Final score: Galaxy 1, Revolution 0. Thanks for following along with STATS!
90' Four Minutes of Stoppage Time
The Revolution will have about four minutes of stoppage time to try and find an equalizer. The last few minutes have been as chaotic and frenzied as any MLS match I've seen this year. Don't be surprised if the wide-open play leads to a goal before the final whistle, either to the trailing Revolution or perhaps a counterattack for LA.
89' Revolution Nearly Earn Penalty
Colaluca was taken down in the Galaxy box with no call in what could have been the biggest play of the match. The referee could easily have awarded a penalty, but there was no whistle.
88' Yellow For Reis As Well
The yellow cards keep coming, as the New England keeper earned one of his own. The crowd is really getting into this match, especially as the disagreements between players get louder and more demonstrative.
87' Yellow For Jordan
Bryan Jordan just picked up a yellow card for the Galaxy for playing past the whistle, and LA seems to be losing their heads in an increasingly chippy match. Some difficult calls have gone against LA, but the home side needs to calm down and earn possession of the ball before New England can equalize.
84' Another Substitution For Revolution
Wells Thompson has been replaced by Nico Colaluca in the New England lineup as the visitors look for some more offensive attack (and hopefully an equalizer) in the final ten minutes.
82' Klein Denied By Reis!
Chris Klein's header in the box could have put this match away for the Galaxy, but a diving Matt Reis knocked the ball away and kept his side within striking distance. Excellent play by Reis!
78' Final Substitution For Galaxy
Tony Sanneh has entered the match, replacing Mike Magee for the home side.
76' Revolution Threatening
New England is about to attempt its eighth corner kick of the match. If the visitors continue to get opportunities in the final third, they could steal a point on the road.
73' Save By Saunders!
A diving Josh Saunders just got a fingertip on a New England header, and the LA keeper prevented the equalizer for the time being. Excellent play by Saunders to deny the best Revolution chance so far.
72' Yellow For Berhalter
Gregg Berhalter appeared to grab the jersey of Jankauskas several different times in a battle for the ball, and Berhalter received the first Galaxy yellow card of the match.
69' Jordan Called Offside
Bryan Jordan mistimed a run and the offside flag went up against the Galaxy. New England has really started to press forward in the last five minutes, and LA has a great deal of space for the counterattack as a result. That time, Jordan went just a bit too early.
67' Eskandarian's Night Is Done
Goal-scorer Alecko Eskandarian gets a nice hand from the Los Angeles crowd as he leaves the match in the 67th minute, replaced in Bruce Arena's lineup by Bryan Jordan.
66' Third Yellow For New England
Pat Phelan just picked up a yellow card for a challenge against Omar Gonzalez. All three cards in the match have been shown to the visiting side.
64' Klein Enters Match
Chris Klein enters the match, replacing Eddie Lewis in the Galaxy midfield, and continuing his streak of appearances. Klein hasn't missed a match since 2005.
61' Substitution for Revolution
Edgaras Jankauskas has entered the match for New England. It's the first substitution for either side. Jankauskas, a native of Lithuania, will replace Kheli Dube for the visitors.
61' Yellow For Thompson
Wells Thompson was shown a yellow card after a hard challenge and a noisy complaint. It's the second card for New England in the match.
58' Saunders Snatches Chance Away from Nyassi
Sainey Nyassi had another golden attacking opportunity on a nice ball from Mansally, but Saunders came diving off his line to barely beat Nyassi to the chance. Josh Saunders has done a nice job so far tonight to keep the Revolution scoreless, with the normal Galaxy keeper, Donovan Ricketts, participating in the Gold Cup for his native Jamaica.
56' Revolution Look More Organized in Second Half
New England is getting the lion's share of the opportunities and chances in the first ten minutes of this second half. Just in the past two or three minutes, the visitors have gotten a long throw into the box, a corner kick, and another dangerous cross. New England's Steve Nicol has made some great halftime adjustments for his side as they look for the equalizer on the road.
53' Mansally Gets Away With Hand Ball
Only a minute after being shown a yellow card, Kenny Mansally reached up and batted a cross with his hand as the ball headed out of bounds. Mansally appears to be extremely fortunate that the referee didn't see or whistle him for the hand ball, which could have resulted in a second yellow card and early dismissal for the Revolution player.
50' First Yellow Card
Kenny Mansally was just shown a yellow card in the 50th minute after a hard collision with Eddie Lewis. The crowd loves seeing Mansally booked after the run-ins he had with the home side in the first half. It's the first yellow for either team.
46' Second Half Underway
The Revolution have taken the second-half kickoff, trying to find an equalizing goal at the Home Depot Center. It will be important for New England to cut down on the available space in the midfield; LA seemed to have its way in the middle third early on.
45' Galaxy Take Lead to Locker Room
Los Angeles had multiple chances in stoppage time, including a brilliant service into the box and a corner kick, but the Galaxy weren't able to score. With the referee's whistle signaling halftime at the Home Depot Center, the Galaxy will settle for a 1-0 lead over the visiting Revolution. Eskandarian has the 8th-minute goal for LA in his first Galaxy appearance, and Bruce Arena's side will look to pick up a full three points in tonight's match (with the second half still to come). Back in a few minutes!
44' Nyassi Denied!
Excellent buildup from the Revolution, as Sainey Nyassi and Michael Videira teamed up to create a golden chance. Unfortunately for the visitors, Nyassi's strike on the give-and-go was saved expertly by Josh Saunders to keep the Revs scoreless.
40' Now Lewis Is Hurting
Eddie Lewis appeared to take an elbow in the back of the head from Sainey Nyassi near midfield and is slow to get up for the Galaxy.
37' Eskandarian Shaken Up Briefly
Alecko Eskandarian took a hard blow over the middle and was down on the pitch for a moment, but he's up and playing again. Eskandarian has shown a willingness to throw his body into the fray, and his toughness has been an asset for the home side in the first half.
35' New England Can't Take Advantage of Set Piece
Jeff Larentowicz didn't strike the ball well on a free kick in the attacking third-the shot never got off the ground and missed wide left.
32' Mansally Not on Fans' Good Side
New England's Kenny Mansally is being booed every time he touches the ball, as the home fans did not appreciate his animated discussion with DeLaGarza earlier in the match.
30' Reis With the Save!
Omar Gonzalez made a perfectly angled header in the box, but Reis was able to make the save for the Revolution. Best play of the night by the NE keeper, and the score stays Los Angeles 1, New England 0 in the 30th minute.
29' Revs Are Chasing
Los Angeles putting together another nice buildup, and the Revolution midfielders are struggling to keep up, chasing from side to side. It's going to be an LA corner kick in the 29th minute.
25' Buddle Trying To Shake Loose
Edson Buddle drew a foul after beating not one, but two midfielders on the attack. Buddle has played exceptionally well for the Galaxy lately, including in the 1-0 victory over league leader Houston on Sunday. Look for the Galaxy striker to make an impact through the rest of this match.
21' Play Getting Chippy
Mansally and DeLaGarza exchanged some less-than-friendly words before a New England corner kick attempt. Mansally thought he was getting held, but no foul was called. The physical play is definitely picking up in California.
18' Larentowicz Earns Free Kick
Excellent footwork from New England captain Jeff Larentowicz in the midfield, and he is taken down hard after beating the defender. Free kick upcoming for the Revolution, about 35 yards from goal.
15' Keepers Active In Early Going
Matt Reis made a nice play for New England to break up a Galaxy run, punted the ball all the way down to LA's Saunders, and then Reis made a beautiful save less than a minute later to deny Edson Buddle a goal.
12' Good Run From Nyassi
Sainey Nyassi made a nice slicing run for the Revolution to earn the visitors' first corner kick, but the Galaxy keeper Saunders came off his line to shut down the ensuing opportunity.
8' Goal For The Galaxy!
Alecko Eskandarian just scored for Los Angeles off a beautiful ball from Todd Dunivant. Eskandarian makes his presence felt less than eight minutes into his first Galaxy appearance. Not expected to start today until Alan Gordon sustained a calf strain in pregame warmups, Eskandarian makes the most of his chance. It's Galaxy 1, Revolution 0 in the eighth minute!
4' Home Side Looks Strong Early
The Galaxy have had two early chances, including a header that missed high on the match's first corner kick. The Revolution defense needs to get comfortable again with the pace of MLS play- this is the visitors' first MLS match since June 13 due to SuperLiga competition.
1' Underway in Los Angeles
We're underway with the first-half kickoff from the Home Depot Center. The Revolution are wearing their navy kit, while the Galaxy is in all-white. Los Angeles is starting Alecko Eskandarian up front, who was acquired in a trade with Chivas USA just this week.
0' Pregame Notes: Galaxy Shorthanded
The Galaxy will be without the services of star Landon Donovan, who has returned from US national team duty, but is a late scratch (due to illness). LA is also missing regular keeper Donovan Ricketts, who is participating with the Jamaican national team in the Gold Cup.
0' Kickoff Coming Shortly!
Welcome to coverage of tonight's MLS match between the New England Revolution and the Los Angeles Galaxy. LA enters the match at 3-3-9 with 18 points on the year, while the visitors from New England are 4-4-4 for a total of 16 points. Kickoff is coming up in just a few minutes.
