| Maynor put himself - and Virginia Commonwealth - on the map as a sophomore in 2006-07, scoring 22 points and hitting the game-winning jumper in a shocking first-round NCAA tournament upset of Duke. The Rams didn't return to the national scene until Maynor's senior season, when he had 21 points and seven assists in a first-round loss to UCLA, but that early exit didn't diminish what the point guard accomplished in his last year in college. He upped his scoring average by four points to 17.9 per game as a junior, then raised it 4.5 points more to 22.4 as a senior while turning into one of the premier players at his position. Maynor's inconsistent jumper hurts him, but he showed more confidence from the outside in 2008-09, attempting 5.4 3-pointers per game but only knocking down 36.1 percent. Maynor's biggest strength is his ability to penetrate and finish in the paint, and with his excellent body control his floater in the lane is very difficult to stop. He's not the most athletic guard, which was one reason he wasn't highly recruited and also a good indicator of why he stayed in school for four years. Maynor also could stand to add some bulk, particularly if he's going to be able to defend his position at the next level. Despite his faults, Maynor is an outstanding leader and has plenty of the traits required for a long NBA career. Chauncey Billups has never been a great percentage shooter, either, but he's developed a reputation for hitting big shots at the right moment - something Maynor is more than capable of doing. His ceiling may be higher than some think - and he's likely a mid-first round selection because of it. |
