Ricky Rubio
Scouting Report
The biggest question surrounding Rubio has not been whether or not he'll be one of the top picks in the NBA draft. It's just a matter of when. Rubio is still under contract with Spanish club DKV Joventut, and he'll have to find his way out of that obligation. But he is entered in the 2009 draft pool, and the consensus is that he's likely to be chosen second, behind Oklahoma's Blake Griffin. For an 18-year-old, Rubio has already created quite a buzz, drawing comparisons to players such as Hall of Famer Pete Maravich and two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash, due to his prowess in up-tempo situations. Despite his young age, Rubio already boasts more experience than most college players. He has played professionally since the 2005-06 season - often against top Euroleague competition - and he played more minutes than any other Spaniard in the loss to the United States in the gold medal game at last year's Beijing Olympics. Among the attributes that scouts have praised are his outstanding court sense and basketball IQ, along with uncommon quickness and vision. He's also amazingly mature for his age, and he's still growing into what is already an NBA body. While he could stand to improve as an outside shooter, Rubio is an explosive playmaker, and he appears to be just as strong on the other end of the court after being named the Spanish league's defensive player of the year this season. There's little dispute that he is the best point guard in the draft and a special talent with strong potential for NBA superstardom, and with so much learning still ahead of him, it's difficult to say just how high his ceiling could be.
