| DeRozan is considered one of the best athletes in the class of 2009. A former McDonald's All-American, DeRozan gained notoriety for winning the slam dunk contest at the high school showcase, using a dunk in which he tapped the backboard with one hand and slammed the ball through with the other to claim the title. He chose to enter the draft after a freshman season in which he finished as USC's third-leading scorer at 13.9 points per game and also averaged 5.7 rebounds. DeRozan, however, was much more productive in the postseason, averaging 19.8 points, 8.2 rebounds and 6.0 free-throw attempts. He admitted before the season that he hadn't been well-coached in high school, and his decision-making certainly improved in one year under Trojans coach Tim Floyd. DeRozan has all too often relied on his physical skills as he made only 6 of 36 3-pointers this past season and shot only 64.6 percent at the foul line. Since he has not yet turned 20 years old, there is an expectation that he will improve in those areas. DeRozan has seemingly been preparing for an NBA career from birth, doing a regimen of squats, sit-ups and push-ups at the age of 10 and first dunking when he was in the sixth grade. His NBA dreams were evident by his friendship with Percy Miller, who became a teammate at USC and is known better for his rap career as Lil' Romeo. Miller's father is the famous rapper Master P, who also owns a sports agency and will likely represent DeRozan. It is also likely that DeRozan will be a top-five pick since his upside is too tough to pass up. |
